In Shakespeare’s Romeo
and Juliet, main character Romeo met Juliet at a party and almost
immediately after, confessed his undying love for her. However, Romeo doesn’t
truly love Juliet, he is simply acting out of his youthful rashness.
In the beginning of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is so heart
broken, he will barely leave his room. He is heartbroken because the love of
his life, Rosaline, does not love him back. After Romeo meets Juliet when Romeo
is asking Friar Lawrence to marry Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence questions
what happened to his love for Rosaline. Romeo states, “I have forgotten the
name and that names woe” (2.3.49). This shows how quickly Romeo is able to
change his emotions, which shows he makes rash decisions.
Additionally, Romeo also only loves Juliet because of her
looks. When Romeo first sees Juliet, he states, “Did my heart love till now?
Forswear it, sight, For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (1.4.59-60).
This shows that Romeo thinks Juliet is beautiful, however that is all Romeo
thinks. Romeo falls in love with Juliet with out knowing anything about her
except that she is beautiful. Even Friar Lawrence a Priest in Verona states,
“Young men’s love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.”
Romeo fell in love with Juliet because of her looks ,which is a very youthful,
irrational thing to do.
In conclusion, while others may believe differently, Romeo
is acting out of youthful rashness. He doesn’t truly love Juliet, he loves the
way she looks. Romeo quickly decides to love Juliet instead of Rosaline because
Juliet is more beautiful, and Romeo is young, so he cannot tell the difference
between true love and what he thinks is love.
